Yoga is based on the philosophy of Sāmkhya, and Taoism is dependent on the Tao’s philosophy, that is, the Lao zi’s philosophy. Both Yoga and Taoism set their sights on nirvana and enlightenment respectively, and also pursue immortality. To achieve this immortality, they highly regard physical health, not simply mantaining a metaphysical thought. The methods of their pursuit of physical training are concentration, meditation, respiration, and alchemy. These can’t be achieve alone, and thus they require a master that is Īśvara and a prime monarch(元君)respectively, who are the ultimate masters. They are both disciplinants and alchemists, because both enlightenment and immortality are impossible without physical health. If their morality is deficient, even though they are healthy physically, they recognize that enlightenment and immortality are impossible. Like this, there are similarities which Yoga and Taoism have in common regarding the seeking of immortality, but there are some differences in that Yoga pursues immortality and freedom by nirvana ultimately, while Taoism seeks an eternal longevity.
