The expedition to conquer the north, which was led by King Hyojong since the war in 1636, was mere propaganda as there had been no material clash with the Qing Dynasty. Instead of the expedition, Joseon deployed joint military operations against the activity of barbarians, accepting the request from the Qing Dynasty for military aid. The China-Joseon expedition to conquer Russia to be investigated in this paper refers to two military expeditions suppressing the Russians in the Heilongjian river basin (the Amur), the border between China and Russia. While the military expeditions did not draw much attention because it was generally thought that Joseon helped the enemies at that time when the argument of the rejection of negotiations was the leading power, the second military expedition led by Shin Nyu was distributed by being written about as fiction, including the “Baesihwang Story” or war stories such as “Diary on the Expedition to Conquer the North” and “Records on the Expedition to Conquer the North”. The memory that Joseon defeated the Russian force by attacking with fire in a naval battle in the war formation led by gunners was brought to life again in the 19th century when the threat from Western forces gradually increased. As foreign vessels frequently appeared along the Joseon coast after fishing boats or merchant ships of China, Jeong Yakyong examined the victory of Shin Nyu from the aspect of the policies and operations of the navy. When Western powers invaded Joseon through the west sea near Ganghwado Island after the General Sherman incident, the memory of the 2nd expedition defeating and attacking enemies with fire was recalled. As a project to remember their ancestors by descendants was combined with such a historical background, the memory of the repulsion of foreign forces using armed force was more enhanced.
