The purpose of this study is to analyze how the job demands of interacting with customers affect job burnout among airline cabin crew and to demonstrate that this effect is moderated by each member’s intrinsic job motivation. In order to test the moderating effects of intrinsic job motivation, regression analysis was performed by hierarchical regression analysis. Age and working class were used as control variables based on the study that job burnout was more frequent in women than men and in younger people. The cabin crew’s job demands had a significant impact on both factors of burnout: emotional exhaustion and cynicism. This study showed that intrinsic job motivation moderated the effect of job demands on cynicism, but not on emotional exhaustion. There are many researches related to the job of the cabin crew. Because of the nature of the crew work, the interactions with the customers are very high, which means that they have expanded customer related tasks to job demands. Research on the variables that reduce job burnout and increase work engagement is steadily being done. It can be said that the scope of the study was expanded through verification of the moderating effects of intrinsic job motivation, which is the personal qualities of the cabin crew. Based on the relationship between intrinsic job motivation and job burnout found in this study, the airline service providers need to ensure that members of their cabin crew are motivated in their work and feel a sense of accomplishment from their performance. Furthermore, the study result suggests that job applicants with these characteristics be selected when hiring airline cabin crew.
