The purpose of this paper is to study the usage of "呢(Ne)" and comprehend it’s grammatical meaning and grammatical function on the basis of language materials on Chinese in modern times. The use of mood particle is one of the difficulties for foreigners to learn Chinese. "呢(Ne)" is one of the mood particle which are frequently used in modern Chinese. In modern Chinese, there are two main types of "呢(Ne)" used as mood particle, interrogative mood and non-interrogative mood, which have different sources. On the meaning and usage of "呢(Ne)", some scholars have explained it in a mixed way, because of that they did not comprehend the influence of its diachronic development upon the meaning and the function of "呢(Ne)" in the synchronic system. This paper takes the mood particle "呢(Ne)" which expresses interrogative mood in modern Chinese, explores the initial period of the use of "呢(Ne)" as interrogative mood particle, and explores the evolution process of the use and usage of "呢(Ne)" on Chinese in modern times in Yuan(元), Ming(明) and Qing(淸) Dynasties. Finally, it uses the theory of "homonymous restriction" and the theory of "focus" and “background” of cognitive linguistics, analyses the initial use of "呢(Ne)" and the evolutionary mechanism of "呢(Ne)" from interrogative use to rhetorical use. This paper supplements the study of interrogative mood of "呢(Ne)" on Chinese in modern times and provides a reference for the study of the historical evolution of interrogative mood of "呢(Ne)" in modern Chinese.
