This paper aims to examine how Daegu Memorial Space functions to remember Daegu Subway Fire and its victims. Daegu Subway Fire, the second worst subway fire in the world history, happened in 2003, resulting in 192 deaths, 148 injured, and 21 missing. It left physical damage as well as psychological trauma to the whole country beyond the city of Daegu. While trying to recover from the disaster, the issue of locating Daegu Memoral Space came to conflict with citizens. With repeated attempts and failures of 13 years, the memorial space was created in Joongang station, the very place the disastrous accident happened. This paper focuses on how closely and truly Dague Memorial Space represent the realité of the accident. First, it reviews literature which contemplates the impossibility as well as responsibility of documenting and representing the historical disaster, Auschwitz. It also reviews theoretical attempts to reveal and perceive the truth of disaster through artistic approaches. Second, it reviews verbal, written and visual documents related to Daegu Subway Fire as well as the creation of the Memorial Space. It concludes that Dague Memorial Space is limited in remembering the urban disaster. The city authorities responsible for the Subway Fire created images of the disaster with their own languages and signs. This paper suggests that citizens keep speaking, writing, imagining the urban disaster until they approach the truths of disaster.
