The Korean honorific marker -si- may agree optionally with the topic, the subject, or the interlocutor. This puzzling fact has aroused controversy over whether this morpheme is to be analyzed as a kind of syntactic agreement marker or as a pragmatic device used to express respect for someone. The purpose of this paper is to solve this puzzle by proposing a phrase called EmP (Empathy Phrase), headed by the -si- morpheme, as a part of the syntactic representation while maintaining that the necessity of this phrase is pragmatically driven. Under the proposed analysis, the honorific marker establishes an agreement relation with an implicit nominal called IMP, which may be coreferential with the topic, the subject, or the interlocutor. The conceptual elegance of this proposal lies in its simplicity of providing a unified account of how the honorific marker appears to agree with various syntactic elements.
