Though 88% of the population of Uzbekistan is Muslim, the country is a secular country. Unlike other Arab-Muslim nations, taking alcohol and eating pork is allowed in Uzbekistan, and Saturdays and Sundays constitute weekends. The purpose of this paper is to investigate why Uzbekistan is classified as a country with a high persecution index for Christianity compared to other nations in the world. Though Uzbekistan is technically a democratic republic with a constitutionally-based political system, in actuality it is a socialistic system with freedom of religion restricted by the government. The World Watch List index for Christianity in Uzbekistan placed it in the top thirteen nations for persecution in 2016, a high rank indeed. Mahalla is a factor as much obstacle as the pressure. The regional community is strong in Uzbekistan. If a person converts to Christianity, he must publicly announce his conversion and is subsequently cut off from the community. Establishing a Christian community affiliated with universities, hospitals, and businesses is a strategy to promote acceptance of those who have been forcibly separated from the mahalla. Uzbek workers that have been exposed to the Gospel during their time living in Korea will then be accepted.
