The aim of this paper is to examine the theme about ‘life to death’ in Philip Roth’s Everyman and Paul Auster’s Man in the Dark in terms of the way to live as an ‘everyman’. As a jewish writer Roth shows his own identity which he lays emphasis upon is declining in sexual power but existing as a ‘man’ in Everyman. Throughout the course of life as an ‘everyman’ in this world, it is we human beings that have the right to life and the right to death in the end. In the case of Auster, he shows his hero in his 70s in Man in the Dark who just is waiting for morning because of insomnia. But Auster tries to put the insomnia in the place of death and by way of this, we the ordinary readers suffer from the same insomnia. When we read Man in the Dark we might be led to think about the life after death. I think Roth and Auster make us, we ‘everyman’ have the chance to think again of the way of life passionately and face death with remarkable equanimity by way of making relationships with others in terms of Levinas’ face to face relationship.
