The Purpose of this study is to clarify 1) that how to acquire movements affects dance performance and to examine 2) that effective dance training (possibly) depends on the methods of acquiring dance movements. For the test project (experiment), thirty participants (undergraduate/graduate students) were chosen at random for acquiring dance movements. None of them had any ballet experiences and information on this study task. They were divided into three different groups. Each group consisted of ten students and undertook a different method of dance movements. 1)The first group was for a whole condition of movement practices. Participants received three movements and practiced them relating one movement to another (as a whole) continuously. 2)The second group was provided with a partial condition of the movement practices divided by upper and lower body parts. The participants were managed to separately practice the movements of each body parts. 3)The project gave the third group another partial condition, which is different to the second group. The members of this group also carried out the same movements as the previous groups did, but regardless of the body parts involved in the movements. They could only focus on each given movements independently. Each groups performed with the following three ballet movements, Pas de bourree - Piroutt - Changement, in different rooms but under the same circumstance. The trials was divided into four sections which were practiced six times, so the total number of the trials was twenty-four. All trials of the sections was recorded and shown to ballet experts. Retention tests were given to the participants in the same way after twelve hours. The experiment design used for this study was a 3 X 4 factorial design with repeated-measures on the second factor. Two-way ANOVA with repeated-measures was used to analyze performance scores in the acquired phases and one-way ANOVA was used to investigate the effect of the diverse methods in the retention phase. The results of the experiment proved that acquiring and performing dance movements have influence on learning ballet in general. Moreover, according to the results, it is shown that different methods for learning dance movements applying to three groups produce different outcomes of performing movements.
