Shipping and port industries have been well developed in Taiwan located in the western Pacific Rim. Following the model of traditional maritime nations, Taiwan’s government enacted some shipping-friendly measures to help the industries in its early expansion stage. Government authorities also have taken actions to liberalize the operations of the maritime-transport sector and port industry over the past ten years. This paper focuses on discussing the development of shipping and port industries. It also points out some issues currently facing by the governmental maritime authorities to continue promoting the country’s shipping and port businesses. Finally, this paper presents some future directions for developing the maritime transport industries in Taiwan.
