Ilpumbyeo, a japonica rice cultivar which is known to have premium eating-quality, and high yield potential, but susceptible to rice blast disease was studied whether it has any specific rice blast resistance gene/QTL. Using CAPS markers which were developed based on the sequences of blast resistance genes Pi5(t), Pi9(t), Pib and Pita, it was identified that Ilpumbyeo had Pii (or Pi5(t)) and Pib that inherited from Inabawase and Suweon295, respectively. In linkage analysis using Ilpumbyeo/GL33 RILs population, it was also revealed that Ilpumbyeo has a major gene Pib in the region between RM208 and RM48 on chromosome 2 against Philippines blast isolate V850230. In the QTLs analysis based on fungal isolates and field blast screening for Ilpumbyeo/Moroberekan and Ilpumbyeo/GL33 RIL populations, some putative QTLs were detected on chromosomes 1, 2, 3, and 9 through analysis of a single-QTL model. The QTLs for diseased leaf area (DLA) to blast fungus were common in the region of Pib gene on the long arm of chromosome 2 in two RIL populations. Four clustered putative QTLs for resistance against leaf blast as well as neck blast were detected on the short arm of chromosome 2 in Ilpumbyeo/Moroberekan RIL population. They explained 5.5~8.1% of the total phenotypic variations. Three QTLs for isolate Ca89 and isolates of blast nursery test were clustered in the region of RM302 and RM265 on the long arm of chromosome 1 in Ilpumbyeo/GL33 RIL population. A QTL qCa89-1.1 against isolate Ca89 explained 28.6% of the phenotypic variation. The effect of resistance genes and QTLs against blast detected in Ilpumbyeo is discussed.
