Studies on granite weathering landform in Korea are being conducted under two themes: studies on regolith and studies on the microtopography of weathering. Studies on granite regolith focus on the paleoclimatic environment. A matter of concern here involves determining under what climatic environment the regolith that is currently being observed has been formed. In general, the same opinions are shared as to how regoliths have not been formed under the current climatic environment. Still, there are some dissenting opinions as to the type of climatic environment under which such regoliths have been formed. Chemical deep weathering has been traditionally stressed, but recent reports point to mechanical weathering. On the other hand, tor, tafoni, gnamma, bornhardt, groove, exfoliation, and flared slope are some of the concepts in the microtopography of weathering. Although specific studies are being conducted on tor, tafoni, and gnamma, the same cannot be said for bornhardt, groove, exfoliation, and flared slope. In terms of weathering landform, most early studies stressed a single process; recently, however, strong trends that recognize diversified processes have been emerging. In addition, there are some cases wherein the process is interpreted differently as the study progresses. Actually, a concept has yet to be established clearly in granite weathering landform as in the case of other landforms. In fact, different terminologies are being used among researchers. Therefore, this issue is believed to require handling by the Society as soon as possible through full-scale discussions.
