An encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV-CBNU)investigate the genetic origin and virulence of the EMCV-CBNUstrain, we determined the complete sequence of the virus andtested its virulence in mice. Genetic characterization revealed thatthe RNA genome was composed of 7,713 nucleotides with asingle open reading frame (2,292 amino acids), coding 12proteins. The EMCV-CBNU had the shortest poly(C) tract,consisting of 10 C’s (C10), compared with all the other EMCVstrains reported in GenBank. Amino acid and phylogeneticidentity with strain 2887A (99.7%), which was originalyisolated from a fetus in a pig breeding farm that had a historyof reproductive failure. Because rodents are the natural hostof EMCV, we investigated the virulence of EMCV-CBNU inmice. Surprisingly, all mice inoculated with more than 1×102TCID50/0.1 ml of EMCV-CBNU showed symptoms of hindlimb paralysis and eventually died during 3 and 8 days post-into pregnant mice, al dams and their fetuses died in 6 DPI.This is the first report on a full genomic analysis of swineEMCV in Korea, which exhibits high virulence in mice.
