Bacilus cereus group bacteria share a significantdegree of genetic similarity. Thus, to diferentiate and identifythe Bacilus cereus group efficiently, a multiplex PCR methodusing the gyrB and groEL genes as diagnostic markers issuggested for simultaneous detection. The assay yielded a400 bp amplicon for the groEL gene from all the B. cereusgroup bacteria, and a 253 bp amplicon from B. anthracis, 475bp amplicon from B. cereus B.thuringiensis, and 604 bp amplicon from B. mycoides for thegyrB gene. No nonspecific amplicons were observed with theDNA from 29 other pathogenic bacteria. The specificity andsensitivity of the B. cereus group identification using thismultiplex PCR asay were evaluated with diferent kinds offood samples. In conclusion, the proposed multiplex PCR is areliable, simple, rapid, and efficient method for the simultaneousidentification of B. cereusin a single tube.
