This paper aims to analyze the transformation of waste disposal system in Westberlin during 1970s. Owing to the geopolitical condition, the first modern waste diposal system of Westberlin was planned to be constituted of two incinerators. This plan was partly realized when the first incinerator began to operate in the Year 1967. This system concentrated on technical disposal of waste, which would preserve hygienic stand of city. However the formation of grassroots political groups and the rise of environmental consciousness made this old system transformed. During 1970s many grassroots political groups took actions to solve environmental problems. With regards to waste problems they found it important to reduce the quantity of waste and developed one alternative waste collection system (Berliner Modell). As a result of those civil actions the old disposal system was transformed in the recycling system which was later renamed as waste management system(Abfallwirtschaft System). In this paper I will demonstrate how the civil actions and environmental consciousness shape technology such as waste diposal system.
