Sungmisan village is an example of creating a village community within the city by forming solidarity through cooperatives. Since a childcare cooperative(1994) and a consumers’ cooperative(2001) were established in this district, the village has organized cooperative network in the areas of care, education, culture, economy and business, ecology and environment, and autonomy of living. The cooperatives are managed as independent businesses according to their area of activity, and they obtain and circulate their own funds, production and consumption, distribution, and jobs. At the same time, they have started to reorganize their local community into a network of reciprocity through their solidarity of managing cooperatives. The case of Sungmisan village shows that the work of creating a reciprocal Maeul can be revitalized by working together in cooperatives.
