The Antigonish Movement was an adult education movement through cooperation for economic activities. The Extension Department of S. F. Xavier University mobilized people using systematic strategies consisting of mass meetings, study clubs, regional meetings, yearly conferences, and supporting educational programs and educated them to mobilize resources to do economic activities. Three groups of people - think-tanks, field workers, and a lot of volunteers supported them to organize a lot of cooperatives in various sectors throughout Maritime provinces in the 1930s. But from the early 1940s, the Antigonish Movement began to take a long decline. In the 1960 when cooperatives were in difficulties, the helpless Extension Dept. broke the relationship with the cooperative sector and unravelled. The paper explores the internal and external factors which caused the success and failure of the Antigonish Movement, focusing on the relationship between Antigonish Movement and cooperatives and discusses the conditions for the sustainable development of cooperatives.
