Margaret Oliphant’s career as the journalist led her to adopt the practical perspective on feminist issues and to expand subject matters of the contemporary domestic novel. Her writings on women are connected with her redefinition and complication of the domestic novel to include discussions of women’s social, political, and economic roles. This paper examines Margaret Oliphant’s writings on women and her domestic novel, Miss Marjoribanks focusing on her practical feminism. Miss Marjoribanks can be viewed as an extension of her writings on women, especially in terms of its strong focus on women’s work and ideological position on feminist issues. Miss Marjoribanks dramatizes the process by which the heroine, Lucilla Marjoribanks controls her home and local community through an effective management of Carlingford. Oliphant shows how the domestic practices are related to the community’s political life through Lucilla’s reorganization of her community. Oliphant leads the Victorian reader to reevaluate the relation of gender, class, marriage and family in the domestic novel through Lucilla’s process of achieving power in the community.
