The debates on Nelly Dean of Wuthering Heights have been focused on her bias and reliability as a narrator. While the early critics had seen her in a favorable light, later scholars were negative towards her. Charges against her were diverse, ranging from inexplicable behaviour to willful misunderstanding, double-dealing, or even villainy. These accusations mainly result from some inexplicable and seemingly unjustifiable behaviors of Nelly. This paper aims to explain and defend those behaviors by considering her social relations and class. For this it will first explain the existence of different colliding social forces in Nelly. She possesses several positive social traits characterized by class consciousness, professional work ethic, and cultured and reasonable thinking. By contrast, there are some negative social characteristics in her such as pursuit of self-interest and feeling of uneasiness about her social status and job stability. As a result, Nelly is seen as a character, despite some positive traits, mostly swayed by negative forces. Frequently, she succumbs to a desire to avoid trouble or serious problems. However, this sin is forgivable in that it faithfully reflects the general traits of her class. All in all, compared with the protagonists of Wuthering Heights whose motives are relatively simple, she is a character developed in greater detail and with greater skill, the more realistically portrayed.
