Chinese classical poets, especially T'ang dynasty's poets often used various images and expressed their emotions successfully by using them. Li Shang-Yin(李商隱) is one of the poets who can make the best use of this images. He liked to modificate the images of “spring(春)” in his poems, and we can also find out many impressive examples in his collection. The images that used in Li Shang-Yin's poems, I think, represent feeling of loss or sorrow that we would feel acutely when we miss departing season of spring rather than the energy of life as plants push out new shoots in spring. Particularly Li often used the poetic diction “grieved over the spring(傷春)”, and that image of “nonexistence of spring” used in his poems alludes to his suffering life that all his dreams failed to come true. Finally the intertexuality of the image of “spring” is inquired not only between Li Shang-Yin's poems and other poets of T'ang dynasty, but also among Li Shang-Yin's poems themselves. The image of “spring” used in Li Shang-Yin's poems was in the tradition founded by other poets in general, however, Li was relatively fond of looking at “spring” from the side of symbolizing it as a love affair. Many of his love poems was characterized by this symbolized image of “spring” as the numerous and beautiful poems of “Untitled(無題)” did.
