The European Commission(EC) has tried to proceed the three main gas policies of internal energy market, security of energy supply, and climate changes simultaneously for 20 years without any fundamental change except for reordering the highest top priority among themselves. In the present, given the aggravation of security of energy supply and climate change, EC has put more emphasis on these two issues with the internal gas market still remaining in the list of the highest priorities. However many experts and concerned people estimate the EC's policies "unsuccessful, even consumptive" The EC's failure in achieving its goals could be attributed partially to ambiguities of objectives in EC's directives, institutional differences between Anglo-Saxon economic model and socio-economical model, and euro-centric gas cooperation policies, etc. This study suggests that EU gas agents, including EC and each EU member state, engage in energy policy-making and industry from the de-modern viewpoints, especially René Girard's theory of 'mimetic desire' and the gift theory in the Christian sense. From such de-modern viewpoints, the EC's previous concept of 'security of gas supply' focused on market function and supply sector might be changed into more comprehensive meaning, which would cover all political and social contexts relevant to gas transaction and all stages from gas exploration to gas consumption, supply and demand. In addition, EU had better transform its euro-centric attitude to non-EU gas exporting countries into an ethical one of other-respect and understanding. The EU's alternative gas policies in accordance with gift theory would give EU more chances to improve not only its energy security and economical competitiveness, but also its ethical, cultural, political, and social status at the global dimension.
