In spoken chinese, the rhythm of “ZheBu” is independent, the meaning of “ZheBu” isn’t the conceptual meaning, but program meaning, which means “ZheBu” is discourse markers, its core function is introduce the content of speech into the conversation, and organize the discourse, have interpersonal interaction and other functions. This function probably get no later than the end of the Ming Dynasty. Early use case have found in ≪The Journey To West≫. “ZheBu” is simplified from “ZheBuShi”. Early usage of “ZheBuShi” is rhetorical question. Can be replaced by “NanDao”, through pragmatic inference in the display context, gradually evolved into discourse markers. the usage of discourse markers “ZheBu” and question “ZheBu” shows difference in rhythm, the tone of discourse markers “ZheBu” is falling tone, but the tone of question “ZheBu” is zigzag tone. the nature of this evolve process is pragmaticalization rather than grammaticalization, and showed many difference with grammaticalization, for example: rapid completion, no reanalysis, prosody enhancement, scope expansion etc. The study of “ZheBu” can provide a reference for the study of the discourse markers.
