This study uses a cognitive approach to explore the meaning of ‘V kai (開)’ structure, which are commonly used in modern Chinese. In addition, except where the verb ‘kai (開)’ is used as a descriptive word and used in conjunction with ‘kai 開+NP’, it focuses on the use of ‘kai (開)’, which is followed by a verb or adjective. The meaning of the ‘V kai (開)’ structure, which is shown in the path schema, is as follows. Extended meanings appear in four categories: separation, acceptance, expansion, and beginning/continuation. The separation is simple direction, and has the characteristic that it is close to the prototypical meaning of the ‘kai (開)’. Acceptance is characterized by the use of a verb that requires space. Expansion has the characteristic that toward to various directions. The beginning is characterized by the change of state before and after the occurrence of motion, focusing on the event. This study analyzes the structure of ‘V kai (開)’, which was of the same form but showed a wide range of significant differences in meaning, but failed to analyze more examples in detail due to lack of verb analysis. We look forward to further research in the future.
