A discussion about the usual theme of Chen Yingzhen’s(陳映眞, 1937-2016) novels, such as the left-wing political ideas contained in the solidarity with the unfortunate neighbors and affection for them，and at the same time Christianity associated with an exploration of the meaning of existential life that transcend the framework of practical history，is an important key to the deep understanding of Chen Yingzhen’s literary thoughts. In this regard, among the existing research on his literature, It is a very informative critical view that recognizes the characteristics of his early literature as “the ideological and emotional tension and entanglement between the Christian faith and the Socialist belief”. However, such a humanitarian characteristics of Chen Yingzhen’s literary thoughts may also be a constant limiting factor for Christianity in his literary world to be implemented in a more profound manner. And his novel Wanshang dijun(1982) is one of the good examples, which illustrates the characteristics of the Christianity and its limitations in his literature. In fact, if viewed from the perspective of the implementation of the critical thematic consciousness toward the global capitalist system represented by multinational corporations, this work can be said to be a tragic story without any prospect. However, viewed from the aspect of the religious potential of the work, the tragic ending of this work can also be interpreted as a new departure that embodies the true Christian salvation consciousness. In conclusion, Wanshang dijun was the work that reflected the reality of Taiwan under its “twisted mirror”, and was an important achievement of the refraction and secularization of modern Chinese Christian discourse.
