Literary tendency of 'return to the old', initiated by former/later seven men(Jeonhoo chilja in Korean) in Ming dynasty, was received in Chosun in sixteenth and seventeenth century, and had great impacts and influences on prose writing. Some studies on this era was mainly focused on two themes: First was changing of prose style into 'pseudo-ancient style' or 'anti-pseudo-ancient style', after receiving literary theory of Ming dynasty. Second thing was on the shaping of 'Chin-Han guwen' (Jin-Han gomun in Korean, writing style of prose modelled for the prose of Chin-Han dynasty) group. Shin Choe was belonging to 'Chin-Han guwen' group. He succeeded to literary tradition of Shin Heum and Shin Iksung based on 'Chin-Han guwen', and handed it down to Sikam Kim Seokjoo. Shin Choe received 'Tang-Sung guwen' (Dang-Song gomun in Korean, writing style of prose modelled for the prose of eight great literati of Tang-Sung dynasty) on the foundation of 'Chin-Han guwen' fashionable at his time. He argued that prose should be natural, and was cautious of unusual, unconventional style. His argumentation was on the harmony of the two: one was 'Tang-Sung guwen' which put the importance on 'thematic communicability' and the other 'Chin-Han guwen' which considered 'rhetoric' first. It is proved by the fact that he edited a book composed of two representatives, Wang Shizhen, representative of 'Chin-Han guwen' group and Mao Kun, representative of 'Tang-Sung guwen' group. His literary value and position could be laid on his role as a bridge in the age of transition from 'Chin-Han guwen' to 'Tang-Sung guwen'.
