This paper is to study on the grammatical category of person focusing on Jespersen’s theory. His theory of person is reviewed with respect to other related categories such as pronoun, verb, number and gender. Person as a grammatical term is redefined in terms of participant roles in discourse which is missing in traditional theory. His classification of person is also examined through the analysis of the relationships that exist between three categories of person. The conflict between notional and grammatical category shows that the personal relationships can be expressed impersonally through substitution of one person for another.
