This paper investigates the first and only comprehensive literary magazine for female Korean writers in Japan, Row a Boat on the Land. In recent years, a number of studies have been done on Korean ex-patriots, examining a broad range of issues in Korean-Japanese literature and society. However, most literature on female Korean writers in Japan focuses on individuals instead of the shared experiences of this group of women. This paper looks at Row a Boat on the Land, which depicts some universal features of Korean-Japanese women, today and yesterday. This literary magazine for Korean women living in Japan addresses issues related to women and life in Japan and publishes a wide range of articles by various writers. Works dealing with the past often describe the first generation of Korean-Japanese women from the perspective of their daughters. These pieces may address a daughter’s ambivalent attitude towards her mother, which is a key component of feminism. Third- and fourth-generation female Korean-Japanese writers, in contrast, discuss everyday matters such as identity, marriage, jobs, social welfare, the problems of aging, and the conflict between their real names and given names. Such works address problems that are common to humanity, forming connections across cultures and increasing interest in Korean-Japanese society.
