Toni Morrison has been concerned with the question of “homelessness” in the African-American’s experiences. Particularly her two novels, The Bluest Eye and Paradise probe into the conditions of “being put outdoors.” Characters in these two works, the Breedloves and the Convent women respectively, were helplessly driven outdoors. However, their eventual outdoor conditions turned out to be contrastingly different; the Breedloves were disastrously put outdoors through their internalization of white dominant values while the Convent women tried to establish, though not successfully, a self-reliant home. These two works investigate the possibility of ‘dwelling,’ according to Heidegger’s terminology, in which man and place are integrated. Claudia and Connie are shown to be the responsible, compassionate builder of this kind of an integrated dwelling place. The author’s “homelessness” narratives, thus, call into question our modern self’s ego-centric drive to produce the peripheral existences to build our being and place.
