The present study compares two different Korean translations of the same source text in order to discuss the problem of mistranslation and, more importantly, the situation of book translation in Korea. The cases of mistranslation discussed in this study lead us to suggest that the prevailing practices of the book translation market in Korea are partly liable for the proliferation of mistranslation. In this regard, what makes this study different from the previous studies is that it suggests, along with upgrading the competence of the translator, the enhanced role and responsibility of general readership and publishing companies in upgrading the quality of translations. Especially, shared responsibility in regard to the final product by both the translator and the publishing company is suggested in this study.
