Although the use of translation in language learning has been much maligned by language researchers, it is widely used in classrooms. This study suggests using double translation to memorize word combinations. Double translation is a two-fold translation of one document. An experiment was conducted using the movie, Forrest Gump, which is a rich repository of word combinations. The experimental group (n = 137) translated parts of the English text into Korean. They were asked to translate it into the most natural Korean version that they could, rather than word by word, and then they translated the Korean back into English. They were then asked to compare their version of the English with the original version. The control group (n = 139) read the script and presented their own interpretations of lines they liked. Two retention tests were conducted, with the experimental group outperforming the control group in the delayed memory test. The experimental group reported they considered double translation helped them focus on the language forms and was beneficial in memorizing them. These results indicate that double translation is a helpful way to memorize word combinations, especially those which make an impression on learners.
