This study demonstrates that comprehending a word cannot be made only by sense selection from the lexicon but by extension and creation of sense in given contexts. Through observing the usages of innovative denominal verbs, it explores the sense determination mechanisms, especially that of innovative ones. Their senses are not listed in the lexicon, and thus cannot be comprehended only by sense selection. The sense extension and even sense creation mechanisms are needed to arrive at an intended meaning. This paper investigates what properties of a noun are transferred to its verb and how the transferred properties of the noun are extended to the sense of its verb. It also examines the affecting factors that interact with this process of sense determination. This exploration of the cognitive processing of denominal verbs will help ESL learners more fully understand denominal verb expressions. The interpretability test of innovative denominal verbs is also conducted to show the contribution to the teaching English to ESL learners.
