The main concern of this paper is to provide an account for the fact that the postpositions in Japanese must be dropped in relative clauses. It is well-known that postpositions in this language bear semantic contents, and that hence, there must be a condition for the 'dropping' or elision of the postpositions in these clauses, such as the identity condition on ellipsis and the requirement for an ellipsis antecedent as attested in VP-ellipsis. Our proposal made in this paper is, following Ferreira (2000), that the postpositions in the Japanese relative clauses must be dropped because pro in Japanese does not have any Case feature. Therefore, if postpositions appear in a configuration where their complement is pro, they cause a violation of the Inverse Case filter. In addition, we show that the so-called "aboutness" relation must hold in the formation of the Japanese relative clauses. The consequence of our analysis is that it casts doubt on the existence of PP pro along the line of ideas suggested by Murasugi (1991) and Miyamoto (1994). Second, functional categories in Japanese can optionally have a Case feature. Finally, Takahashi' (2001) postulation of pro in Japanese can be derived from our analysis, when we adopt Bošković's (2003) suggestion that the driving force for A-movement is Case.
