Hong, H.R., Kang, H.S., Park, J.K. Clustering of metabolic syndrome risk factors are associated with physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness in elementary school children. Exercise Science. 17(4): 483-494, 2008. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the clustering of metabolic syndrome risk factors and objectively measured physical activity and whether cardiorespiratory fitness in elementary school children. A total of 213(101 boys, 112 girls) healthy elementary school children aged 12 to 13 years were participated in this study. The participant's physical activity was measured with the accelerometer(life corder EX, 2006, Suzuken, Japan) for seven consecutive days, and CRF with a maximal treadmill exercise test by using the bruce protocol. The outcome variables were statistically normalized and expressed as the number of SDs from the mean(i.e., Z scores). A metabolic syndrome risk (sitting systolic and diastolic blood pressure, waist circ., fasting values of triglyceride, total cholesterol, glucose, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol) score was computed as the mean of these Z scores. Oneway ANOVA and independent t-test were used to examine statistical significances in the measured variables across physical activity quartiles and between boys and girls. We found significant sex differences in body fatness and physical activity and CRF such that boys had higher values in BMI, percent body fat, waist circumference, WHR, VO2max, and physical activities than girls. In the total subjects, both physical activity and CRF were inversely and significantly related to clustering of metabolic syndrome risk factors even after controlling for age, sex, sexual maturation, and dietary intakes. In conclusion, the findings of the current study suggest that both physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness were independent predictors of clustering of metabolic risk factors in elementary school children
