This study was performed to confirm that lighting effects can change affective impressions and preference of photographs. The stimuli were images of living things, a natural scene, and architectures. The affective impressions were evaluated on a 7-point scale based on three affective dimensions ('positive-negative', 'dynamic-static', 'light-heavy' impressions) and preference. In experiment 1, the original images and images with four kinds of light effects were compared: lighting from top left, top right, bottom left, and bottom right. On the positive-negative impression, lighting effects from bottom left were more negative than the originals, and lighting effects from top left were more negative than the top right. On the static-dynamic impression, the images with lighting effects of all directions made the originals change to a more dynamic impression. There was no difference of affective impressions between the originals and the lighting effect of any direction on the light-heavy impression. In experiment 2, original images, the images of highlighted centre (HC), and the images of blurred background (BB) were compared. The BBs were relatively more negative, more dynamic, and heavier than the originals, but there was no difference of impressions between HCs and the originals.
