노인에서 요로감염은 흔한 감염증이고, 또한 균혈증의 주요 요인이다. 대부분의 요로감염증은 경미한 임상경과를 보이지만, 일부에서 중증의 패혈증으로 진행될 수 있으며, 특히 노인에서는 생명을 위협하는 치명적인 질환이 될 수 있다. 인구의 고령화가 진행되면서 병원이나 요양시설에 입원하는 노인들이 늘어나고, 특히 요로의 구조적, 기능적 이상이 있거나 이를 유발하는 기타 질환들이 동반된 노인들에서 복잡성 요로감염증이 문제가 되고 있다. 적절한 항균제 치료를 통한 감염증 치료 이외에도 기저 질환의 치료가 재발 방지를 위해 매우 중요하다.
