총담관결석은 내시경 유두괄약근절개술을 시행한 후 다양한 바스켓과 풍선도관을 통하여 제거하는 것이 표준술식으로인정받고 있다. 내시경의사는 내시경역행담췌관조영술 전에미리 시술과 관련된 합병증의 위험인자를 파악하고, 시술 중에 합병증을 최소화할 수 있는 노력을 기울이는 것이 무엇보다도 중요하다. 지역과 인종에 따라 총담관결석의 자연경과및 시술에 따른 합병증의 발생빈도가 다르기 때문에, 환자 개개인의 특성을 고려하여 적절한 시술방법을 권유할 수 있도록 해야 한다.
