The purpose of this study was to analyze life science achievement in TIMSS 2003(Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study), which was conducted in 2003 with 46 participating nations. The average percent correct of items was analyzed according to main topic, item type and cognitive domain. The items that showed differences between the average percent correct of Korean and the international average, and between the average percent correct of boys and girls were further analyzed. The result showed Korean students performed higher than the international average, especially in the main topic of ‘structure, function and life processes in organisms’, ‘cells and their functions’, ‘reproduction and heredity’, and ‘diversity, adaptation, and natural selection’. Furthermore, Korean students, in particular Korean male students, demonstrated significantly higher achievement in both multiple-choice items and items requiring ‘conceptual understanding’. Korean students performed relatively high achievement in the items that concerned content the students had learned from their previous biology lessons in school. On the other hand, Korean students, in particular Korean female students, demonstrated significantly lower achievement in the items that they had not learned yet, including ecosystem, natural selection and immunity.
