In this research, it is targeted to devise evaluation criteria for science teachers on their teaching competence. Reasonable criteria on teaching competence were proposed with purpose to make the science teachers motivate themselves for improvement of the science classes. For this purpose, analysis of the precedent researches related to teacher assessment and survey on the opinions of science teachers about the criteria of teaching competency were performed. As a result, assessment categories and criteria of teaching competency for science teachers were acquired. The assessment categories include the areas of understanding science knowledge, of pedagogical content knowledge, of professional development, and of support on science activities. Sub-categories for each area and criteria were also developed. The proposed assessment categories and criteria will contribute to enhancement of the quality in teaching for science teachers and to improvement of the science education in secondary schools.
