Although the college liberal education has an important place amidst the diverse innovations that are currently iterated in universities in Korea. In particular, the design studies, through which the educational goal of creative fostering of talents could be met, are focused on the effective role and value as a liberal education. To this end, first, through a theoretical consideration with respect to the general meaning and purpose of liberal education, the design-related organization and contents that are encompassed in the liberal arts education are examined. Second, the goals and objectives of the liberal education that is currently practiced in universities in Korea are reviewed, for which, by examining the types of subjects that are related to art and design, the current status of design education in the liberal education at national universities is observed, and the problems are analyzed. And third, using the observed contents to date as the basis, as the directions for design liberal education, the three contents of aesthetic literacy education, creative improvement education and fusion-type education are proposed and their possibilities are discussed. This study limits as the scope of study the design liberal education that is tailored for the non-major students, and, further, this study attempts to solidify the assertions and positions about the application as a fusion-type education and effective aesthetic education for the cultivation of creativity. As such, based on the results of this study, we hope that multifaceted research on the development of design liberal education for a fusion education for creative future knowledge would be accomplished.
