Background : It is well known that stroke patients with significantly impaired proprioception are associated with poor functional outcome. The purpose of this study is to evaluate usefulness of visual feedback training to improve proprioception of the affected wrist joint in stroke patients. M e t h o d s : We performed proprioceptive visual feedback training in 10 stroke patients with impaired proprioception. They felt the sense of direction on wrist joint, but the proportion of correct response on screening test was below 60%. We had set 5 angles in every 30 degree between flexion 60°and extension 60°of wrist joint, and we moved the patient’s wrist joint to each angle randomly and had them choose whichever angle that they felt to be compatible. We also let them see the result of the test. They were trained everyday for 2 weeks. We examined proprioceptive function in wrist joint before training, after training and 30 minutes later on training. Results : The proprioception of the wrist joint in stroke patients was improved by visual feedback training and improved proprioception continued 30 minutes later on training. Conclusion : Visual feedback training may improve proprioception in patients with stroke.
