The purpose of this paper is to study Shakespeare's perspectives regarding female by focusing on the cross-dressing of Viola in Twelfth Night. Many studies on female characters in Shakespeare's works have focused on the bifurcated confrontational structure between genders. This study, however, will attempt to analyze the female characters in terms of an independent being of society rather than treat them in the context of such confrontational structure. Based on the pivotal question of this study, i.e., whether Shakespeare is a feminist or humanist, what anti-comic factors are embedded in Twelfth Night will be first determined in this paper. Second, the meaning of Viola's cross-dressing will be discussed. Last, Shakespeare's viewpoints of female will be further discussed. Shakespeare can be considered an author who tried to equally see men and women at a time when inequality between sexes was taken for granted. Shakespeare treats the issues in terms of matters of human beings by focusing on the harmony between genders. In this sense, this study claims that Shakespeare is a humanist rather than a feminist.
