This study aims to clarify how the will to meaning works in the process that Edgar, the victim of his relations, rejects to be a slave of the painful fate and changes himself into a victor of suffering, for the better understanding of his character and role in King Lear. I focused my attention on three issues. They are as follows: ① the pit of fate which Edgar falls into; ② the discovery of the meaning in each situation where he meets mad Lear and blind Gloucester separately; ③ getting back his name.Edgar is optimistic, rational and pure-hearted. When the urgent situation in which his life is in great danger has become his unchangeable fate, he chooses not to be destroyed by the fate but acts self-transcendently as well as with his strong will to meaning. At the same time through those experiences he himself learns humility, patience and the wisdom to wait for the ripeness of time, and then realizes the tragic reality of life in the face of the deaths of both his father and Lear.We see that the will to meaning and the capacity of self-transcendence have supported Edgar's life so strongly. When we consider that man exists in a web of relations and that there are always violence and pain wherever human beings live, we can say Edgar's attitude toward life shows us a way we can live as a victor of suffering.
