Can one find any christology in the Letter of James? It is well recognized that James conveys in his letter the Christ’s presence through Jesus’ teachings, ‘the implanted word’ (1:21), ‘the law of freedom’ (2:8; 1:25) and ‘the wisdom from above’ (3:17). Along with these implied christological concepts, James employs ‘the Lord (κύριος)’ christology throughout its chapters. Among 15 occurrences of ‘the Lord’ titles, only 4 cases clearly refer to the Christ. Yet the uncertain 9 cases and even the 2 occurrences (3:9; 5:4) that refer to God, may indicate its interchangeability with the Christ sharing its significance in the given contexts. Largely, James’ use of κύριος title for the Christ’s various roles in the letter can be classified into three categories. First, κύριος in 1:1 and 4:10 underlines Jesus’ exaltation. Second, ‘the glorious Lord’ in 2:1 plays a particular role of the christological basis for the church to resist against the worldly value system in regard to the wealth and poverty issue. Lastly, James’ use of κύριος title occurs more frequently in chapter 5, particularly in view of the Lord’s parousia and judgment. These critical features of the Lord Jesus Christ reinforce James’ repeated emphasis on the church’s patience and endurance till the Lord returns and grants the conclusion of their faith (5:7-11). In sum, κύριος title in James’ letter along with some implied christological concepts, provides a firm theological foundation for the letter’s distinctive eschatological and communal ethics.
