This study conducted foot reflexology with college women in their twenties with a symptom of chronic constipation for the purpose of examining its effects on constipation and intestinal functions and using it as an effective method to relieve constipation in college women. The period of study was from April 26 to June 24, 2010. The subjects were 18 college women suffering from constipation who attended C University located in Suncheon City. They were divided into the experimental group (n=9) and the control group (n=9). The experimental group (n=9) received foot reflex zone massage and circulation massage for 30 minutes, twice per week for 6 weeks by this researcher, whereas the control group(n=9) was given circulation massage without foot reflex zone massage for 6 weeks and asked to maintain their habitual ways, and the results are as follows. Regarding constipation condition, the experimental group showed a decrease in the mean score of constipation assessment from 11 to 4, 6 weeks after treatment. It suggests that constipation was greatly relieved with a significant difference(P<.001). Regarding intestinal functions, the experimental group showed a decrease in the mean score of intestinal functions assessment from 29.89 to 20.67, 6 weeks after treatment. It suggests that intestinal functions were greatly improved with a significant difference (P<.001). Regarding change in body heat before and after foot reflexology, the experimental group increased body heat from 32.6~33.5℃ to 33.4~35.0℃ at the abdominal region after the first foot reflexology, suggesting a 0.9~1.5℃ increase. In the 12th times of foot reflexology (6weeks after treatment), the body heat of the abdominal region was increased from 32.7~33.7℃ to 34.0~35.0℃, suggesting a 0.9~1.6℃ increase. Regarding blood pressure and the pulse, while here was a little difference in blood pressure before and after treatment in the experimental group, a significant decrease was found in the pulse (P<.01).
