“As the opening leader in The World in 2010 puts it: An increasingly confident Indonesia may well replace sluggish, kleptocratic Russia in the club of emerging superstars: the BRICs could become the BICIs.” remarked The Economist last year This study investigates the role of Foreign Direct Investment(FDI) in Indonesian economy. What role has FDI played in Indonesia's economic performance? Especially did FDI raise job creation in Indonesia? By using FDI statistics in BKPM of Indonesia, I identify the important role of FDI in enhancing employment growth in Indonesian economy. Considerable FDI also went to secondary industries such as textile, leather goods & footwear and metal, machinery & electronic businesses that were responsive to Indonesian economic growth in 2008 as in the previous year. This paper would provide an answer to the question of whether FDI augments job creation and thus contributes to recent sustainable growth in Indonesian economy. Finally, The government has to enact measures to promote FDI inflows, including anti-corruption laws to stamp out corruption.
