This paper examines whether the development of the economy of the Chosun Dynasty under the Japanese rule was continued or discontinued by the Korean economy after the Liberation from Japanese rule. In spite of its importance in Korean modern history, this issue is very difficult to explain objectively. To pursue the issue further, first, I compare The List of Factories as of 1938 with The List of Factories as of 1949, which reveals the number of continued factories owned by Koreans. Secondly, I investigate how many Korean factory owners still remained in The List of Factories in 1949 in comparison with those which were listed in The List of Factories as of 1938. As a result, I found that 4.9% of factories and only 3.8% of Korean factory owners in The List of Factories as of 1938 survived, compared to The List of Factories as of 1949. This result suggest that the factories in The List of Factories 1949 indeed were not related to those that existed in 1938. This ratio is substantially small in comparison to 17% of Korean factory continuity and 23.3% of Korean factory owner continuity respectively between 1930 and 1938. In conclusion, Korean factories and Korean factory owners experienced a dramatic change during the 1940s, and a few of them survived after the 1950s. Almost all of the factories run in 1949 emerged after the Liberation of 1945.
