As can be inferred from The Anti-Spiritual-Pollution Campaign(清除精神污染) of 1983, the political atmosphere of China in the early 1980s was still preventing the emergence of new intellectual trends in Chinese society. Nevertheless, the series of Toward Future(≪走向未來≫), influential in the 1980s Chinese society, was edited by Jin-Guantao(金觀濤) and published by Sichuan People Publishing House(四川人民出版社) in 1983. This article explores how the series could be published. By comparing Toward Future and Youthful Manuscripts(≪靑年文稿≫), another series published in 1980 but soon banned by political force, the author claims that the political resource of alliance(挂钩) was crucial to the publication of Toward Future. However, according to the author’s explanation, it was not because of Jin-Guantao’s and his colleagues’ ability to mobilize resources that they were able to acquire this political resource. Rather, the political resource were given to them from outside of them, and in that sense, it was more like an opportunity structure. More importantly, such an opportunity structure continued to grow in Chines society in 1980s. It was an opportunity structure, this article suggests, that fostered new meetings and new businesses in 1980s China and led to the emergence of new intellectual trends.
