As one of the greatest german Romantic composers Robert Schumann(1810-1856) made a massive contribution to the develOpment of the song cycle in which emotional text and tone-colour are smartly combined. In 1840, so called ‘Liederjahr’ he composed over 150 songs. The song cycle《Myrt(h)en》, Op. 25 which is dedicated to Clara one day before their wedding, allowed ‘a deeper insight into Schumann’s musical workings’ as he himself acknowledged. This work consists of 26 poems by various poets. ‘Myrthen’ are often used traditionally to make bridal wreaths. The fact that they smell sweet but need to be cared very well are apprOpiate to the meaning of the marriage. In the whole work appears the cyclic bridal motive as the portrait of a woman which is described in the songs <Der Nußbaum>, <Du bist wie eine Blume>, <Lied der Braut>, and <Zum Schluss>. Schumann’s romantic musicality is expressed in many of these songs, for example through the amen-cadence of the word “Himmel”(sky) in <Widmung> and some variations of Clara’s theme in <Widmung>, <Lied der Suleika>, <Venezianisches Lied>, <Lied der Braut> and <Lotusblume>, Clara’s favorite song. His brilliant characteristic of song cycles are represented above all in the balancing between poem and music which is particularly found in <Der Nußbaum>.
