A total of 3,619,143 cows recorded by NongHyup (National Agricultural Cooperatives Federation) from 1995 to 2007 were used to check up trends of recording system for sire and dams in the population by farmers. Only 1,123,162 heads out of 3,619,143 were analysed to investigate inbreeding level of Hanwoo (Korean Cattle) cows. The inbreeding coefficient of each animal was calculated by an Angel Toolkit. The ratio of animals with known parents versus unknown parents was greatly increased. The results showed that about 80.2% of animals born in 2007 had both known parents, while as about 86.3% of animals born in 1995 had both unknown parents. However the averaged progeny number per sire was steadily escalated from 28.40 in 1995 to 813.71 in 2006 and the averaged inbreeding coefficients was increased from 0% at 1995 to 0.3% in 2007. The estimated inbreeding coefficient showed that Hawnoo population had fallen into safe ranges and was relatively lower than other breeds. However, poorly recorded pedigree data might have prevented assessments of Hanwoo population for correct inbreeding levels. Therefore, further research to estimate exact inbreeding levels of Hanwoo population with other techniques such as using molecular markers is needed, and development of education programs such as how to reduce or maintain inbreeding levels of animals while pursuing their of breeding goals.
