A Study on Actual Food Situation under Diferentiated Rationing System in North KoreaThe fod situation in North Korea has been misunderstood both theoreticaly and in actuality. Most experts have clung to observe on-that is based on production and agregate demand. This tendency has brought mis-understanding in reference to their analysis on North Koreas food shortage.This paper focuses on loking into the dif-ficulty of obtaining food in North Korea. It pays attention to the differentiated rationing system among diferent classes of people-higher class being the more politically faithful ones to the central authorities--and follow the rationing sys-tem and pattern that has formed in North Korea.tinued to produce more than 40 thousand ton of crop per year. These figures represent abundance in yields, and it would seem that North Korea would be free from food shortages. Depending on the conventional quantitative aproach, we may come to the same conclusion. But at the oth-er side of food distribution, we reach a contrary conclusion that North Korea is stil under food shortage that is structural in nature.In food rationing North Korea has fol-lowed strict guidelines according to class distinction. The lower-clas who compose an overwhelming majority (more than 70% of total) still suffer from severe food shortages. The diffi-culty is due to higher class, a small ruling group(les than 30% of total), who receives much more rations than others because of their higher political standing. Therefore, in spite high production, most comoners in North Korea cannot help but sufer from food shortages.The food rationing system affects the sup-that fod distribution is an important factor in ex-aming the food situation in North Korea when the existing quantitative aproach alone is not enough. Therefore, we need to use these two methods to beter understand food situation of North Korea correctly and actually.
